Teenaged Trio Nabbed In Stolen Car Pursuit In Wellesley: Police

Three 15-year-olds led police in a chase that reached unsafe speeds in the latest development of a string of stolen car cases in Wellesley, officials say.

Police noticed a vehicle driving at very slow speeds on Colburn Road in Wellesley around 1:45 a.m. on Tuesday, May 2 and attempted to follow the vehicle as it sped down Washington Street, Forest Street, and into Needham, according to the Wellesley Police Department. 

The speeding vehicle's license plate indicated that the vehicle was stolen from Great Plain Avenue in Wellesley early Monday morning. 

Needham police joined in the chase after the stolen vehicle, but the vehicle's unsafe speeds soon required police to abandon the chase. 

The stolen vehicle hit a curb while turning onto Highland Avenue towards Route 95, damaging the car and causing a plume of smoke to billow out of it. Needham police followed the smoke and found the vehicle disabled on Highland Avenue and Oakland Street. 

Three people ran down Oakland Street away from the car, one of whom was caught and arrested by police. The other two occupants of the stolen car ran into backyards in the area. 

Wellesley and Needham police created a perimeter around the area, Wellesley police deployed a drone, and Massachusetts State Police and Quincy police sent K9 units to help in the search.

The three suspects were determined to be 15-year-old juveniles from Medford, Somerville, and Brockton.

The neighborhood where police initially noticed the car driving slowly was the site of a stolen car pursuit only one week earlier.

Two other cars were stolen and two stolen cars were recovered in Wellesley on Monday. One of the recovered cars was found on Great Plain Avenue and the second was found in Philips Park.

They were taken to the Wellesley Police Station and were charged with receiving a stolen car.

The three joy riders were released to their parents and will be arraigned later in May in Dedham District Court's  Juvenile court.

The stolen car will be processed for forensic evidence. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. a backyard with the stolen vehicle's key fob shortly after the State Police K9s joined the search. Both were arrested.
